Project 2

I've chosen the tool focus group for my next project.
In fact, I still don't know much about what I'm going to do next. Since I didn't get the chance to use laser cutter and vinyl cutter, I plan on use either of these tools for my next project. The idea that comes to my mind so far is that I am gonna design some symbols or logos and make sticker or poster of them. The reason is that I've worked as a logo and poster designer in a construction company and I am interested and have passion on make symbols that are abstract or have meaning. The next question is I'm still thinking about what materials to be cut or put stickers on. I think it should fit into a theme or an idea.

Project 1 conclusion

At beginning of this project, I really had a hard time coming up with a solid idea in my mind because this is a new experience for me - to design and build something that reconstruct personal space. I've never been thinking about the idea of my personal space, nor have I worked on it. After doing several brainstorming I've identified couple of problems with my personal space, I've got the idea about saving and reorganizing space in my personal space, which is my room. Then I first designed the foldable storage box to solve this problem. However, it didn't really work due to material for building it, and the worse thing is that it was only a weekend before the project is due. Under this situation, all I can do was trying to reconstruct existing object into something I want. Then I designed this multi-use shelf.
My deign proposal for solving my problem is to save, and make better use of my personal space. The concept of this shelf is to organize things by putting it on higher place with minimum space, so I used peg wood to make things can be hung on the wall. This shelf dose a fairly good job on hanging that. Another fancy feature that I added for the shelf is lights. It works pretty well on serving as a night lamp. My friend also suggested me to paste different color of cellophane on inner wall and put a spinning plate under the shelf so that it can be a disco ball for parties. I might try this idea in some of my friends' place when there's party.
Since this project is done in rush, there is something that I might want to change or fix. First the bottom area of shelf is small so it can only store things like books or something not bigger than that. I think this can only be fixed by reforming bigger shelf. Another thing is that I can to make or attach couple of platforms on the middle of shelf walls. This will expand its space for placing objects. What I did for this is inserting two largest hanger on mid-wall for support and place a piece of board just like this:

It works well if I don't put something heavy. Also, since this shelf is too big to bring to class, I only show images of my project for presentation. Some of my reviewing peers wished to see the actual size of it, so here's the picture of me and shelf:

It's about the same height as me.

To sum up, I personally think this project allowed me to learn how to identify to problem myself and solving it. This really is a good experience to me. Also, another lesson I've learned is that never change my mind for a six-week project on the weekend before it's due, or it will just ruin a weekend!

Finishing touch on Monday

Today the job after I finished my classes was to paint the shelf and put light bulb inside. For the color of shelf I chose white in order to match wall color in my room. First I painted my shelf outdoor so that the smell won't effect the entire room.

After leaving it outside for about two hours for drying, I put electric cord on wood bar and stapled it all the way down to the bottom of shelf.

After putting light bulb and turn it on:

Now almost everything is done. Here's how it looked when light is turned on:

The last job is to move this big thing back to my apartment and put hooks on.

Lightening the dark room:

Progress on Sunday

Today I worked on making front side of the shelf. I personally think this will be the most difficult part of the entire project for me because I will have to screw hinge on 2,5"-thick peg wood without breaking through the other side. What makes it hard is that the length of screws that I will be using is much longer than 2.5", so I will have to cut them shorter in order not to penetrate the board. Before doing that, the first thing I did was to install a wood bar on near the top of shelf for hanging light bulb.

First I cut wood bar with circular saw in to the shape I want.

Then install it into top of shelf.

Here comes the nasty part - installing hinges.

I used nylon rope from my friend for door knob on the bottom of door.
Here's how it looked like when it's opened:

I paid too much attention on screwing hinges so that I forgot to take detail pictures how I put them on. At first I thought it will be hard to screw, but after I practice two times, I started getting used to it and made it more perfectly.

Progress on Saturday

My plan for today us to re-cut the boards into the exact shape want and attach them onto shelf. I brought all my materials to my friends place to work because the noise of circular saw is extreme disturbing in my apartment. Here's the materials:

These are original shelf and peg wood

On the right side of boards are wood bar that will support the entire shelf.

This is whole pack of peg wood hooks (47 pics, but I don't think I can use all of them)

Paint and hinges. (I actually bought brown and white color because I think these two color work pretty well on coloring furniture, but I ended up landing on white color.)

Electrical screw driver (since it's not going to be easy to use hand driver) and tool box.

Here is roughly what's going to be like after building:

I started working by screwing boards on the shelf:

Then I added wood bars on inner side of shelf to support both boards and shelf:

Next is attach rear side of board by screwing wood bars together.

This the whole view of shelf so far:

That is my progress till the end of the day. Tomorrow I will start working on front part of shelf and thinking about how to let light bulb be holding in the shelf.

Preparing to execute

On Friday I went to Home depot for my materials. I've purchased:
-One large piece of peg wood (For walls of shelf)
-A pack of locking peg hooks (For hanging thing on peg wood)
-Two small hinges (For door in the front)
-Three wood bars about 4-feet long (For supporting inner part of shelf)
-A cord with switch (For light bulb)
-A bottle of white paint (For decorating shelf)

I asked staff there to cut peg wood into pieces I want. Also I've got some nylon rope and a 40- watts light bulb from my friends. For instruments for building shelf, I will need a circular saw, screw driver, and screws. I will borrow these instruments from my friend Dennis

New Solution and Design

After I abandoned my old idea, I came up with a new solution. In order to save room in my personal space, I think I can arrange things upward. What I mean is that I will design a storage box or closet that is high and narrow on the bottom so that it won't take too much space in my room while putting more thing on the top. At the same time, I hope this furniture can have other functions, and what came up in my mind is to be a light source in my room.
My plan is to reform furniture in my room to achieve this goal because I don't have much time to build. Then I've found a small book shelf in my room about 2,46-foot high and 12" square on the bottom. That will be my target to reform.
For the enhancement and making the shelf taller, I've been to one of my friends' house garage and he had a kind of plywood board on the wall called peg wood which have many hole for inserting hook to hang tools. It think this will work for both hanging objects and make lights go through. I decided to screw this board to the book shelf, then put one or to light bulb on the upper part. Here's my rough blueprint for what I am going to build:

I decided to cut peg wood into three 6-foot tall and 12"-inches wide to attach on left, right, and rear side of shelf and make a foot long door on the front side so that I can put more things into it.
However, the things that I will mainly put are books or paper.

Abandoned plan

After trying and testing the several materials for building storage box. I've found many technical difficulties to build this thing. Also, teammates from personal space group pointed out some problems with my design.

1. If I am going to use plywood for boards, they will have to be thick enough to punch slots for spikes. In this manner it will take a lot of space and the weight will be heavy. If I use cardboard, the durability and strength of box will be very weak.

2. The material of connection is also a problem because I can barely find something that can be bent and tear apart.

3. There are some more useful designs for this type of storage box existed. For example, I found a kind of storage box that can be taken apart. In that way connections and strength of box is no longer a problem because they won't be folded. Comparing with that, my design is not very practical.

These are the problems that I've encounter during the process of building storage boxes and I still can't solve them after two weeks of testing. I think it's better to abandon this idea and design a new object to solve my personal space problem.

Blueprint of storage box

Here's the blueprint of my storage box, although it's just a rough draft.

There's a board with five spikes on each side. I've decided to use it for supporting the entire box when it is in a square shape. I'm still thinking about what kind of material I should use. My candidate for board is plywood and cardboard. However, for connections of each board, it is hard to think of something that can be bent and separate. I am thinking about using rubber or ropes for these connections.

Possible solution

For solving space problem in my room, I decided to design a foldable box that can store some objects like school supplies, books, clothes, etc. I've got this idea from the square storage closet in my room and it looks like this:

My idea is that i will try to make a size base on this storage box and make it foldable. The reason I want to make it foldable is that when not usiing it, the box can be fold into its minimum size and save more space.

Problem Identified and Design Proposal

Problem:

For this issue, I consider my living room as personal space. The problem that I have identified for my personal space is that I have limited space in my room to use. This is due to my inefficient way of organizing and using my room space. Therefore, making more space in my room and organizing it will be the problem that I aimed to solve.

Solutions:

1. The first thing I should do is to get rid of garbages and stuff that is not in use in my room. These thing will be something like paper, bottles, plastic bags.etc.

2.Reorganize and move the furniture so that I will gain more space in my room

3. Design or think of something that can save the space as well as storing more stuff.
